Laboratory Technician (QA/QC) responsible for the testing of road construction/preventative maintenance materials; performing tests in accordance with specifications in AASHTO, ASTM, and Blacklidge Quality Management System. The technician needs to be observant of material characteristics and can advise management on details that may affect results. He/she should analyze test data to prevent non-conforming products and maintain the quality and accuracy of testing equipment. This position reports to Plant Manager.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct routine tests of asphalts and bituminous materials according to written AASHTO, ASTM or BEI procedures
  • Able to sample emulsified asphalt, PMA tanks and trucks
  • Must be able to meet all safety requirements and applicable safety policies
  • Reduce data and calibrate results of tests
  • Must be willing to work overtime when required including weekends
  • Maintain lab to be neat and orderly, ready for inspection at any time. Including scraping and sweeping floors
  • Have a professional appearance and speak in a professional manner
  • Inventory tracking, tank gauging and temperature procurement
  • Assist with plant operations, when requested or required
  • Basic housekeeping duties (cleaning up the lab daily, spilled products, litter, etc.)
  • Properly maintain equipment, tool cleaning and storage
  • Participation in safety meetings and occasional selection of topic
  • Basic written recordkeeping and inputting data into Excel
  • Adherence to all environmental, health and safety rules, policies and procedures


  • Ability to read, write and speak fluently in English
  • Ability to utilize a calculator for basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)
  • Ability to enter data into Excel
  • Ability to acquire OSHA 10-hour safety training
  • Knowledge of basic lab instruments and equipment
  • Self-motivated and able to work with little direction


  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Acquire certifications for state DOT’s operation
  • Current state automobile driver’s license and a reliable vehicle, potentially for work-related travel

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift and carry 50 up to pounds. Ability to climb (ladder) and comfortably work at heights of approximately 25 feet
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions with appropriate weather protective gear
  • Willingness and ability to work long shifts beginning or ending at any time of day
  • Adaptable and flexible to work varying days and shifts

  • Fast-paced and potentially stressful working conditions
  • Predominately indoor, possible outdoor work with limited shade and protection from the elements
  • Work in a lab environment with exposure to petroleum products
